Project-Ready Shovel
Mysteriously appears
An anonymous benefactor left this handsomely decorated gold project-ready shovel at Pastor Dan's door this week. Notice the artfully painted cross and dove on the handle. Now all we need is the ground-breaking beginning of our building project. Stay tuned. Click here to view our Architectural Slide Show.

Christmas Gathering Sunday Night
  2013 Christmas Gathering
Don't miss our gala annual Christmas Gathering on Sunday, 12/7, 5-8 pm. This festive family function will include a delicious ham dinner, a special visit from Santa for the children, a “fun” ornament exchange, music, conversation, and fellowship.
Bring an ornament to exchange to add to the fun (no more than one per family member, please).
Also bring your favorite Christmas side dish to share... we'll provide the main dish, dessert & drinks.
We need an accurate count: Please sign up on the kiosk so we'll know how much to purchase for the dinner. Or send email to Kathy Lodico at with the number of people attending in your group.
To help get you in the spirit, view one of our slideshows of previous Christmas Gatherings: 2013,   2011,   2010
Second Sunday in Advent – Bethlehem Candle
Light two candles as the family says together: Jesus said, "I am the Light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of Life."
A child asks: Why do we light two candles?
A parent responds: The first candle reminds us of the light of hope of the prophets. The second candle reminds us of the dark night when Joseph and Mary found light and warmth in the stable.
Read about the search for a place for Joseph and Mary to spend
the night:
 Luke 2: 1-7.
Sing or listen to 0, Little Town of Bethlehem
O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light
The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love
O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God the King And Peace to men on earth.
Pray: Dear God, help us to have room in our hearts and our homes for other persons who need us. We thank you for friends and strangers who have received us when we were lonely or afraid or tired. May we be ready to receive the love God offers us in Jesus. We pray in the name of Christ our Lord, Amen.

Prayers and Squares
Spirit of Joy is home to Chapter 115 of Prayers & Squares, a non-profit world-wide prayer ministry started right here in San Diego County in 1992. We meet every Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. to create pocket squares, lap squares, and lap quilts for those who need prayer for any reason.
The idea behind these quilts is simple, yet powerful. Embroidery floss is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is offered for someone in special need - someone who has asked us to pray for them. The quilt is then given to that person. What makes each quilt so special is not only the pattern, color or workmanship, but the fact that prayer is tied into each one. These comforters are a statement of faith, and a testimony to our belief in God and in the power of prayer.
Please visit us any Tuesday morning. The work is rewarding and the conversation and fellowship are warm and loving.
We also treasure the thank you notes we receive. Here is a recent one;
My Gosh what a wonderful surprise!!  I absolutely love my Prayer Quilt!!  It is beautiful.  You could not have picked better colors or motif!  The deer look like the ones in my front yard.
I really appreciate your thoughtfulness and caring for others.
I believe in the Power of Prayer! I use the quilt over my legs while I ice my new knees.
Thank you for your time and this very special gift!!  Please know you have made a difficult time a lot more comfortable!  My prayers are with you.
      Thanks again,
Prayers & Squares will be on winter break the month of December. We will resume on Jan. 6.
