Fellowship Event April 19
Type Img Alt Here

By now you should have received via U.S. Mail your invitation to our Fellowship Event on April 19, which will be the culmination of our Glorious Unfolding Stewardship Campaign. On that night we will be making the commmitments we have been praying about for the past several weeks. It will be a time to celebrate the path we are taking as we come together in fellowship, food, and fun. It will be a special time in the life of our church and you'll want to be a part of it. Expect a phone call to confirm your reservation.

In the coming weeks we'll publish additional information about contributions in order to help you decide what your own stewardship commitment will be. In this issue we discuss Principles of Giving; in coming weeks we'll talk about giving "in kind" and suggested levels of giving.

Principles of Giving

In considering your contribution to our campaign, you may find it helpful to note several principles God has given us.

The Stewardship Principle: Stewardship is recognizing that God already owns all that we possess. It is also an acknowledgment that God provides us with the resources for our lives, and through us, resources for the life and ministry of Christ's church. We are to be good stewards of all that God has given us.

The Voluntary Principle: No one at Spirit of Joy will judge the amount of another's gift. Paul said in II Corinthians 9:7 "Each should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

The Sacrificial Principle: The word "sacrificial" can be defined as "to set apart" or "to make holy." Jesus chose those who gave sacrificially as models for giving. Further, scripture makes it clear that God measures the gifts we bring not in comparison to those of others, but in relation to our resources.

How do we reach our goal? Through prayer and sacrificial giving. Indeed, our campaign involves "not equal giving, but equal sacrifice." Read how Jesus celebrated the smallest offering in the lesson of the widow's mite in Luke 21 and Mark 12.

Families Visit USS Midway

SOJ Men's Fellowship has scheduled a family outing to the  USS Midway Museum for Saturday, April 18.

The tour will be led by our own Tom Aldern, who as a Navy Radar Intercept Officer flew in F-14A Tomcats off the USS Ranger aircraft carrier. He was also an F-14 instructor and served at NAS Miramar for a number of years. Tom will tell stories about his own experiences as he shows us examples on the Midway flight deck of the actual planes he flew. (F-14 Tomcat and Miramar were of Top Gun fame.)

If you have a child ten years or older who would like to join us but you are unable to attend, talk to Bruce Hindman, Harvey Payne, Chuck Snyder, or Tom Gilmore. SOJ Men will watch out for them and see that they enjoy the trip. You must give them the ticket cost plus snack money, and be able to drop them off and pick them up at church.

If we get 10 or more attending , tickets will cost: Adults=$15; Senior over 61=$12; youth 6-12=$8. Please sign up on the kiosk.
