Introducing RightNow Media

Spirit of Joy has just subscribed to a new Christian-based video streaming and download service which has been described as "The Netflix of Christian Bible Studies."  RightNow Media currently has a growing collection of 10,000+ streaming and downloadable videos. In coming weeks and months we'll be creating collections of videos for our own Spirit of Joy Bible Studies, Home Groups, Youth activities, and personal Christian growth. When we get some of this organized, you can receive your own login to access this collection free of charge.

Advent Begins Next Sunday

Sunday, November 29, is the first Sunday of Advent. During this wonderful time of year we remember the story of how God came into the world to love us and save us. If you have children or grandchildren, help them to understand and appreciate this story by gathering your family together in the evening of each of the four Sundays before Christmas and sharing a brief Advent program. The first Sunday is below. All you need are five candles... one for each Sunday and one for Christmas Day. This can become a treasured memory-making tradition. Click here to download a printable Advent program.

The Family Advent Celebration below describes the Candle of Prophecy as "the light of Hope".
Click here to view a brief RightNow video about this prophesied Light of Hope that we have in Jesus' birth... Emmanuel... God is With Us.

Look for other Advent videos in the coming weeks.

First Sunday: Candle of Prophecy

Light the first candle as your family says together: Jesus said, "I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

A child asks: Why do we light one candle?

A parent responds: This candle reminds us of the light of hope that the prophets had in their expectation of a Messiah who would bring peace and love to the world.

Read what the prophets hoped for when they thought and prayed about what god would do for his people:
"The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness on them has light shined." (Isaiah 9:2)
"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel." (“Emmanuel” means “God with us”) (Isaiah 7: 14)

Sing or listen to O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
     O Come, 0 Come, Emmanuel,
         and ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.
     Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, 0 Israel!
O Come, thou Wisdom from on high,
          Who ord'rest all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.
     Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
shall come to thee, 0 Israel!

Pray: Dear god, our world is in darkness. We need the light of peace and love to shine in our world. Help us to prepare our lives and our homes to receive the one who said, "I am the light of the world."
