Greatest Generation Fete

Ralph and Irene Kling are long-time and beloved members of Spirit of Joy. And they also represent the early maturity, courage, heroism and stick-togetherness in which the Greatest Generation was bred, born, and reared.

Ralph and his twin brother were high school seniors in a  central California farming community when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Soon after they graduated, they had enlisted and were assigned to pilot training in the Army Air Corp. By early 1944 Ralph was in Florida, training as a P-47 fighter pilot.

In early February Ralph's high school sweetheart, seventeen year old Irene, was on a troop train to Florida, and on February 18, 1944 Irene and Ralph were married. Next week they will celebrate their 72nd anniversary.

Less than 2 months later Ralph shipped out to England. In September, on his 70th mission, he was shot down and suffered serious burns before he could bail out. He spent the last nine months of the war in German POW camps, undergoing assorted trials and hardships.

After the war Ralph became a high school teacher and was principal of a large high school in Northern California.

Happy 72nd Anniversary
Feb 18, 1944

On Sunday Evening, February 21, Ralph will share some of their story. It will instruct and inspire all of us to recall a time when young people had to step up early to the responsibilities of mature adulthood. So please invite your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors to attend this special evening.

We also invite other members of that Greatest Generation to join us... please bring your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles so we can express our appreciation for their long lives of accomplishment and service. Click here for more information about Ralph's wartime experiences, including articles and interviews.

Youth Winter Retreat

The eNewsletter thanks Trevor and Shannon Stemper for reporting on January's Youth Winter Retreat at Big Bear Lake. Their remarks are printed below. According to Alyssa, this was one of the best retreats she's ever attended. This winter retreat was a partnership with First Congregational. Alyssa meets on a regular basis with youth pastors from around Ramona, Julian and Borrego. Several of our youth events each year are in conjunction with youth from other churches.  Thank you, Alyssa, for promoting interchurch fellowship in Ramona.

Trevor writes, "Winter Retreat was very fun. I personally enjoyed the worship and solo time. It was amazing to look out on the frozen lake during solo time. Of course the snowboarding and games back at the cabin were great."

Shannon writes, "I liked the snow on winter retreat, since we do not get snow in Ramona. So it was fun to snowboard and walk in it. I also liked the solo and large group time. I think that Tim (worship leader) helped me to connect with God even deeper."
