“Christ is Risen! Alleluia!”

What a blessing it was to enhance our Holy Week journey with music:  Palm Sunday -- “Come, Touch the Robe;” Good Friday -- musical reflections on the Last Words;  Easter Sunday and Groundbreaking -- Praise Team, Festival Choir, Brass Quartet, and congregational singing added to the culmination celebration of our Lord’s Resurrection!!

Let us retain the memories as we continue to move forward, following the Lord’s guidance in our lives and ministries at Spirit of Joy.  Thank you to all who helped make this Lenten season and Easter Sunday exceptional!

Easter season has just begun!  Now we celebrate!  Now we proclaim and share the good news of the Gospel with others.  Now we also “lose” singers from our 8:15 choir and Festival Choir as they return to their “other homes” in Minnesota, Arkansas, and New York until they’ve had enough of that humidity and those mosquitoes and join us again in the fall.

Now is your opportunity to help fill those vacancies and offer your voices to the Lord!  Please consider helping with summer special music.  Beginning in June, you have a chance to thank our weekly 8:15 choir for their year round efforts to enhance our worship services.  Please consider lending your vocal or instrumental abilities for a Sunday or two.  Let me know if you would consider joining with others in learning simple, melodic songs to glorify God during July and August.

Praise the Lord for the days He gives us to let His light shine through us!
Joan Brown, Director of Music

Sonshine Ministries Benefit SOJ Youth

For years now, each summer our youth have attended Sonshine Ministries Houseboats camp on Lake Shasta. Of course the students are enthused about the skiing, wakeboarding, banana boating, swimming, tanning, and floaties galore. But Sonshine ministries include two staff on each boat who team with our own leaders to add Bible study, worship, and sharing. There is no doubt that this event is one of the important keystones of our youth life at Spirit of Joy.

But their impact doesn't stop with that  camp week. They also have an effective ministry that trains, equips, develops, and provides an opportunity for young people to grow in service, leadership, and maturity.  They actively seek out senior campers to become staff member trainees. As staff members those young people discover the joy, pain, sacrifice, and challenge, of humbly serving and leading campers and one another.

Case in point: In 2007 high school senior Alyssa Barlow went on our youth group Lake Shasta houseboat trip (photo aboveClick here for the 2007 slide show). Sonshine Ministries recruited her to be a member of their team, and today Alyssa Howland would gladly tell you the beneficial impact their camping and leadership ministry has had on her own life.

But she isn't the only one. Last year as a high school graduate Alyssa and Sonshine Ministries recruited Nick Stemper to serve on staff as a boat cook (Click here for the 2015 slide show). This year, he's going back as a boat pilot. Like Alyssa, he also is developing leadership and ministry skills.

But in addition to serving through the summer, these young staff members are actively involved in financially contributing to the camping ministry. All staff members raise scholarship money for needy campers by participating in an annual Memorial Day Run-Jog-Walk-A-Thon.

You can help Nick reach his scholarship goal of $600 by pledging an amount for  every lap he runs. This year he expects to run 25 laps. Sign up at church on his registration form on the kiosk, or contribute online directly to Nick's account by clicking here (in the lower right corner of that web page, pull down the "Select a Sonshine Staff" menu and select Nick Stemper).

If you have a junior or senior in high school encourage them to attend this year's Houseboat trip July 25-29 and talk to both Nick and Alyssa about the leadership possibilities of Sonshine Ministries. There's no better way to spend a productive and meaningful summer.

Ugandan Children's Choir April 24

One of Spirit of Joy's highlights in the spring of 2014 was the visit by the Ugandan Children's Choir (Click here for the 2014 slideshow).

On Sunday, April 24, the Ugandan Children's Choir will perform for us again at both worship services.

We need homes to house the children and adults. In you're able to help out please let Barb Dacy know by sending her email at admin@sojchurch.com or by calling her at 760-788-7456.

It's a Hard-Knock Life!
Jaden

It's a hard-knock life, but someone has to do it. Recently the Zook family cleaned the church for a month of Saturdays and Heidi and Jaden pitched in. What a great example of sharing and giving. We truly appreciate their contributions to our body life together at Spirit of Joy.

Please emulate this great example of teaching your children how to contribute through tithing of time and talent.  Sign up your family to clean the church for a month of Saturday mornings. Light vacuuming, mop the floors, wipe down surfaces, and take out the trash.  You can help make a huge difference in making our the Church look clean and welcoming each Sunday.

Finally, we'd like to recognize your contributions in this eNewsletter: Please take photos of your cleaning team at work and send them to your eNewsletter editor at newsletter@sojchurch.com.
