Music at Spirit of Joy

Much is going on with music at Spirit of Joy throughout the summer and into the fall!

Bryce Harrison, our Director of Contemporary Music, has just returned from Princeton, where he continues to progress toward his Master’s Degree. Joan Brown, our Director of Music, along with her husband Scott, Karen Dietmeyer, and Dianne and Craig Jackmann are touring Ireland for 10 days as singers with the combined choirs of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Poway and Mission San Diego de Alcala.

I want to give a big THANK YOU to all who are helping with summer music!  Our 8:15 worship singers have had opportunity to sing for 10:00 services, and Praise Team will have opportunity to help with 8:15 music.

Music at VBS was a big hit, as we experienced last Sunday! Bryce will be adding to the youth’s houseboat experiences with his beautiful voice and guitar.  We are blessed to have such willing and talented musicians through whom the Spirit shares joyful song!

Mark your calendars: September 9 is Lutheran Choir Night at the Padres.  Last year was the first year we participated in this annual event, and all in attendance agreed we wanted to participate this year also.  Everyone is invited to sing the National Anthem before the game.  Music and ticket information will be forthcoming. Spirit of Joy benefits from each ticket that is sold.

God bless us and keep us while we are absent one from another.
Joan Brown, Director of Music

VBS 2016

Vacation Bible School last week was a smashing success. Thanks to the tireless efforts of many volunteers, and especially our youth helpers, Spirit of Joy was transformed into an exciting mountain trek adventure.

VBS is just one of the many fantastic children and youth opportunities that Alyssa has planned and conducted for this summer. Click here to see our artistic and informative Youth Ministries web page. Take the time to scroll down in the right column to see a ton of photos of our youth ministries in action. While you're at it, click here to view our children's ministry web page.

Mere Christianity

Men's Saturday Bible Study begins September 3, 6:30-8:00 as we read and discuss C.S. Lewis' masterpiece, Mere Christianity.

Christianity Today described this as " the most important and effective defense of the Christian faith in its century. [It is still rivaled] by no other apologetic, [and] it's worth taking a look at...."

Join us every first and third Saturday as we do just this.

Anatomy of a Disciple

Home groups begin the week of August 28-Sept 3.

You have a purpose in this life. Do you believe that? Do you live like it’s true? Walk together in your Home Group through this journey of The Anatomy of a Disciple. It will give you a clear, thorough picture of Jesus’ life and what it means to be His disciple. You'll learn how to live out the teachings of the Bible in a practical, relatable way.

This study will prepare us to heed Jesus command in Matt 28:18, "go and make disciples of all nations" as we begin the process of reaching out into the community around us.

Update on the Land

Pastor Dan reports that our third grading submittal to the county is awaiting approval of our landscaping/irrigation plans. If the County staff doesn't drag its feet on a normal 30-day review process we should be ready to begin moving dirt by mid to late August.

Our motto has been, "Unless the Lord builds the house, these who build it labor in vain" (Ps 127:1). While the process has been painfully slow, and several glitches have had to be overcome, Pastor Dan reports that God has provided relief in some major areas.

  • To mitigate the loss of 9 acres of non-native grassland, we had to purchase several acres for the nature conservancy land bank. We were able to obtain suitable land at a substantial discount from what we expected.
  • The fill dirt stockpile building up on the north end of our property will save us a huge bundle in trucking and driver fees for hauling it in.
  • The County required us to hydroseed and irrigate 9 acres, but our civil engineer convinced them to reduce it due to the drought as well as our grading mitigation guidelines. We must now irrigate only 1/2 acre which will alleviate significant up-front and ongoing costs.

Please continue to pray for our new Church building.
