Circle the Cross camp out
November, 2009

It is hard to believe that we are beginning to gear up for the fall season: young people going back to school, families finishing vacations, and church life moving forward with our two-fold emphasis — Inward Growth, Outward Ministry

We continue our worship at 8:15am and 10:00am.  Beginning August 28th — Rally Day —  we will have Sunday School at both worship hours.  At 8:15am we will provide child care and Sunday School for preschool through sixth grade.  At the 10:00am service we will have child care and Sunday School for preschool through high school.

Rally Day on August 28 will be an exciting day in our life together.  We will enjoy a breakfast provided by the men's fellowship, kickoff of our fall programming and ministry with an emphasis on Home Groups and eight weeks of looking into our own lives and what it means to be a disciple.  The afternoon will begin at 4pm with a BBQ provided by our youth and the pinewood derby races with all sorts of prizes to be enjoyed.  Plan to make this a part of your Sunday.

We also move into our new fold-emphasis in our church life: Inward Growth and Outward Mission.  Our inward growth will include all the ways in which we are engaged in growing our spiritual lives.  We will be encouraging Bible Studies, worship, personal devotion, and HOME GROUPS.  In October we will all be involved in a "Helping Hands" Sunday on October 16th.  On this special Sunday we will each sign up for one of many different community service projects and then go out into our community to work on those projects.  We will have projects for everyone....those that can move throughout our community, and those that can work right here at the church.  Plan to make this a great day of outward focus for Spirit of Joy.

We are eagerly waiting for the final approval for our grading permit.  There has been much activity on the property this past month, with over 6000 cubic yards being stockpiled for our use during the grading for the worship center and fellowship/kitchen/offices center.

These are great days...we invite you to invite others to catch the vision we share at Spirit of Joy  Have them join us in this incredible journey and adventure that God continues to unfold in our midst.

See you Sunday,
Blessings, Pastor Dan

Sunday morning's opening chorus, "They'll Know We Are Christians by Our Love," struck a resonant cord with our new church theme, Inward Growth, Outward Mission.  Consider the words:

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord
And we pray that all unity may one day be restored

And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love.

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand
And together we'll spread the news that God is in our land

We will work with each other we will work side by side
And we'll guard each man's dignity and save each man's pride

All praise to the Father from whom all things come
And all praise to Christ Jesus His only son
And all praise to the Spirit who makes us one

And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our love.

This illustrates what we read in last week's eNewsletter: spiritual growth leads to agape love as we walk together, work side by side, and encourage and protect one another. How else will people be able to see our love for our family, friends, neighbors, and beyond?

The picture above reminds us that Spirit of Joy has long been involved in a variety of social ministry projects that are organized by the church: serving Open Door meals, Pennies for Magdalena, Christmas Shoeboxes, Thanksgiving meals, Prayers and Squares, and more. And there are no better friends than Spirit of Joy members when one of us experiences a loss or need.

Beginning the week of August 28 our Home Groups will embark on a series of discussions focused on Discipleship: inward spiritual growth. And during this time each of the Home Groups will work together to identify and work toward developing an outward mission by identifying and then filling a need within the community or beyond. (Click here to preview our Discipleship materials.)

These are exciting times to be a Christian as we live in a word where Christians are too often known for those things we are "against." Our journey together will instead draw attention to the things that we are "for." This is what happened in the early church days when Christians were a despised and abused minority. Their love and care for those around them succeeded in changing the world! Hospitals, public schools, orphanages, penitentiaries and reformatories, abolition of the slave trade and then slavery, and much more were the results of this kind of agape love.

Are we excited? You bet!

This writer is also the newsletter reporter and publisher, the Web master, and the church photographer for both the newsletter and web site (as well as Bible Study & Home Group leader).  As he soon begins his 76th year, something has to give. Therefore, he is seeking volunteers to  help him with some of these tasks.

You can help by being eyes and ears for our great body life:

  • Are you planning a Spirit of Joy event: send details including any relevant pics to him. He'll write it up and include it on the website and newsletter. .
  • Are you attending a Spirit of Joy event? Send your smartphone pics to him (he sees you taking them!). Just your family? We want to see them... don't be shy. The bigger the photo (i.e,. megapixels) the better. And tell us a bit about the photo: where it's taken, who is in it (first names only of children), what they are doing, etc.

  • Did you read or see or view something interesting about your Christian walk or experience: Send a few details, web links, and pics. He'll try to write them up and include in the newsletter and web site.
  • Finally, all of us always like to hear about life passages, victories, challenges, and interesting stories about one another: Please send your anecdotes and stories and he'll see what he can do.
  • By the way, recently we've received great pics and videos from Harvey Payne and Jerry Cole. We'll always try to give credit where it's due.

As the saying goes, many hands make light work. If you like to write or take pics, this is a great way to help out. The alternative is boring newsletters and web pages littered with generic clip art (shudder).
