Joan Brown Announces Retirement

I have no doubt that God led me to Spirit of Joy in the spring of 2000.  At the time I was leading the contemporary service at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Poway, directing the high school choir there, accompanying the choirs at Rancho Bernardo High School, helping Scott with his recently founded biotech company, and raising 2 teenagers.  Taking on a Director of Music position at Spirit of Joy was the farthest thing from my mind!  However, after a few months of filling in part time, I told Scott I felt God was “nudging me” to give the opportunity more serious consideration.  Our entire family was “taken in” by the genuinely welcoming and “joyful” environment that was evident at Spirit of Joy.  Little did I know what blessings were in store for us as I accepted the position in August, and this new journey began.

Seventeen years later I still love being a part of ministry here.  It has been, and continues to be, my joy and my blessing to direct and accompany weekly and festival choirs as well as lead worship, but my fulfillment really comes from observing how God works through all of us to weave together our talents and contributions and uplift and unite our spirits, enabling us to become stronger in faith and Christian family

Over a year ago I shared with Pastor Dan that I felt God was beginning to “nudge” me again.  I didn’t know what was in store, but I began to anticipate some type of change.  In September that change will occur in the form of retirement.  September 10 will be my final Sunday as Director of Music at Spirit of Joy.  Scott and I will remain active members of the congregation. We both look forward to supporting Bryce and participating in music ministry, continuing to be a part of our Home Group, and moving into Spirit of Joy’s new location on Highland Valley Road.

Our retirement plans include scuba diving, traveling, spending time with family, and taking advantage of new opportunities to share God’s love and compassion.  We will be a little “scarce” during this fall transition -- We have a dive trip scheduled to Cozumel, MX, and we plan to visit our daughter Lauren and her husband Greg in Maryland.  Our son Michael, his wife Ruby, and our soon-to-be 3 year old grandson Miles live in the L.A. area, and we look forward to spending “entire” weekends with them.

In the meantime let us continue to “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!”  Thank you for your tremendous support and for being an amazing family of spirit led, loving, welcoming people.  We are indeed blessed to be blessings.
